Many Returns on Investment in Training

We’re been on the road in recent weeks, meeting with a wide variety of stakeholders in adult training and education.  At our recent SXSWEdu panel, we fielded several questions about ROI in training.  Does it really pay off?  How do companies calculate it?  What can companies do to ensure that the money they spend on an employee doesn’t end up benefiting a competitor, if the trained employee leaves?

Researchers and consultants have identified a complex matrix of returns, tangible and intangible, that investments in training yield for companies, ranging from increased productivity, customer service, and profitability to employee attitudes, retention, and advancement.  Various reports also suggest that even modest or incremental investments in hourly wage workers benefit companies in big ways.
