Lowest Paying Jobs

This “Top 10″ — or “Bottom 10,” as the case may be — came across our radar this week.  What’s striking is that arguably five, possibly six of the occupations on the list are in the food service industry, where an employee’s customer service skills, attention to detail, and personal hygiene are critical to ensuring both positive and safe experiences.

While the current debate around the minimum wage focuses almost exclusively on what an increase will cost a company, we should also be talking about how business can improve products, services, and experiences that are of greater value to customers and help offset increased costs.

Ironically, the front-line workers that represent many companies to consumers are the lowest paid in the corporate ranks.  In addition to raising their average pay, we need to help these employees develop skills that enable them add value to a business, improve customer service, and eventually advance along career paths.
